History of Baluchistan

Thousands of years. One enduring land.

From ancient Mehrgarh to the Khanate of Kalat — trace the timeline that shaped a people.

A nation across three states

Historic Baluchistan stretches across what are today three countries. The people remained one; the map did not.

Pakistan

Largest share of the Baloch and home to Balochistan province (capital Quetta). The Khanate of Kalat was acceded here in 1948.

Iran

Western Baluchistan — today Sistan and Baluchestan province — was annexed in 1928 and centres on the Makran coast.

Afghanistan

A northern Baloch population in Nimroz and Helmand keeps deep tribal and trade ties to the wider homeland.

Timeline

From the earliest settlements to the present day.

c. 7000 BCE

Mehrgarh

One of the earliest farming settlements in South Asia rises on the Kacchi plain — evidence of a civilisation rooted in Baluchistan for millennia.

1666

The Khanate of Kalat

Mir Ahmad Khan founds the Khanate of Kalat, which for centuries unites much of the Baloch homeland under Baloch rule.

1928

Western Baluchistan annexed by Iran

Reza Shah Pahlavi's forces bring western Baluchistan under Tehran's control, dividing the homeland's west.

11 Aug 1947

Kalat declares independence

As the British withdraw, the Khanate of Kalat declares independence — a sovereign Baloch state recognised for a brief eight months.

1948

Accession to Pakistan

In March 1948 Kalat is acceded to Pakistan, sparking the first of several uprisings for Baloch autonomy.

1958–1977

Cycles of insurgency

Successive movements (1958–59, 1963–69, 1973–77) press for rights and autonomy across the divided regions.

2000s–today

A homeland, still one people

Across Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Baloch continue to assert a shared language, culture and identity that no border has erased.

National Anthem

The voice of a nation — its verses, melody, and meaning.

The Baloch Anthem

Mā Čukēn Balōč

A national anthem carries the spirit of a people — their land, their struggle, and their hope.

This space is dedicated to the anthem of the Baloch nation. From the Yal console you can paste the official verses, add a transliteration and translation, and link a recording (MP3 or YouTube) for visitors to listen.
